38C3: Doom on a fax machine

Two Dutch white-hat hackers recently demonstrated at the annual congress of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) in Hamburg how they hacked into a fax machine and even got the classic game Doom to work.

More precisely, it was about the fax part of a Lexmark multifunction printer. The presentation is as amusing as it is instructive:

(Note: If you are short on time – the actual fax part starts at about 00:21:45)

The attack shown is, of course, extremely sophisticated. Nevertheless, it illustrates the benefits of using cloud faxing instead of insecure fax machines. What’s more, Cloud Fax also works with multifunction printers from many well-known manufacturers, but in this case it uses email (Mail2Fax / Fax2Mail) and therefore doesn’t require a telephone line.
