For cloudy email: Retarus Email Security via API

As email remains the backbone of corporate communication, ensuring secure and reliable email communication is essential for businesses of all sizes. Retarus has been offering robust email security solutions for more than 30 years, with the Retarus Secure Email Gateway (SEG) model as a trusted option for leading enterprises around the world.

New delivery option

Retarus is now adding a new deployment model via API to their portfolio. This offering is designed to complement our existing SEG approach, providing organizations with greater flexibility in how they secure their email infrastructures. The API implementation is particularly well-suited for organizations using cloud-based email platforms such as Microsoft 365, allowing them to easily enhance their email security without changing their infrastructure.

The API variant – Gartner refers to this as ICES (Integrated Cloud Email Security), Forrester calls it CAPES (Cloud-native, API-enabled Email Security) – is a cloud-based email security solution that integrates directly into cloud email platforms, filtering email traffic in a different and often more flexible manner. It provides critical protection – including filtering for phishing, spam, malware, and advanced threats such as Business Email Compromise (BEC) and zero-day attacks – without the need to reroute all email traffic through an SEG and modify the MX records.

API complements Secure Email Gateway

At Retarus, the SEG approach remains the primary way to provide their security services as it continues to be an optimal solution for most businesses – especially those that require a more centralized and comprehensive solution to manage their complex email environment. With the API connector, Retarus now offers a complementary delivery model for those seeking a more flexible solution to increase their email provider’s basic protection. The key difference between the two approaches is how they integrate with email systems.

  • SEG functions as a gateway through which all incoming and outgoing emails are filtered and secured before reaching the organization’s servers or cloud email service (e.g., Microsoft 365).
  • Retarus Email Security via API directly integrates with platforms like Microsoft 365. This gives organizations the opportunity to benefit from additional security services without altering their existing cloud-based email workflows and configurations. Organizations using the API connector can enjoy seamless email protection.

Dream team: Retarus Email Security and Microsoft 365

Connecting via API provides multiple benefits to organizations already using Microsoft 365.

  1. Seamless Integration: Retarus Email Security integrates directly with Microsoft 365, the deployment via API is simple and non-intrusive. It reduces complexities and ensures that the end user experience remains largely unchanged. Malicious emails can be automatically removed directly from users’ mailboxes – albeit with a slight delay in many cases.
  2. Enhanced Protection for Microsoft 365:While Microsoft 365 provides (basic) built-in security features, many organizations seek additional layers of protection to defend against increasingly sophisticated threats. Retarus offers advanced threat protection via APIto detect and block threats that might bypass native email filters – including for mixed M365 license plan environments (E1/E3/E5).

Flexibility and choice

By offering both Secure Email Gateway (SEG) and the new API deployment, Retarus provides organizations with the flexibility to choose the model that best suits their needs and infrastructure. Whether companies prefer a proven, centralized security approach with SEG or the connector model, they can rely on Retarus’ security expertise.
