For the past ten years IBM Research has been releasing its annual “5 in 5” prognosis. This time round it’s all about visibility.
For 5 in 5 IBMs scientific researchers identify the technical innovations and inventions they believe have the potential to change our lives over the coming years. For 2017 they are shining their spotlight on the use of artificial intelligence to examine our language as an indicator of our mental health, hyperimaging (also by means of AI) to enable us to “see” beyond visible light, macroscopes to give us clearer insight into the big picture, the placing of entire medical labs on a chip and, last but not least, smart sensors that utilize silicon photonics to detect environmental pollution.
As usual 5 in 5 also makes for rewarding reading in greater detail ;-). And always when I read this kind of crystal ball gazing, I ask myself where we at Retarus fit into the picture. At least for the last three use cases we have a part to play with our information logistics and our global delivery network. And even if I suspect that the prognoses offered by the team at IBM Research might only be conditionally more accurate than the predictions of futurologist Matthias Horx, it still feels good.
