Due to new U.S. regulations, all international Application-to-Person (A2P) SMS traffic to the United States will require a pre-registered sender ID.
Likewise, for all Retarus outbound SMS services, 10-digit long codes (10DLC) and dedicated short codes used for SMS traffic to the US must also be pre-registered.
In other words, A2P SMS messages with unregistered sender IDs will fail.
Retarus is happy to assist your company in registering a 10DLC number, which is a cost-effective A2P messaging solution. It uses a dedicated 10-digit local telephone number allocated within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).
Generic or alphanumeric sender IDs are not allowed for registration. The sender has to choose either to register a 10DLC number or use a dedicated short code (recommended for high volume traffic such as is the case with marketing campaigns).
10DLC and SMS: A new sanctioned solution for businesses sending A2P messages
A 10DLC number is a US-specific, carrier-sanctioned, 10-digit phone number for business messaging which is considered an approved A2P long code.
10DLC is great for use cases that do not require very high throughput, such as:
- Two-factor authentication
- Appointment reminders
- Airline-related updates
- Rideshare updates
Every major US carrier including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint offer carrier-supported A2P 10DLC. Once the transition period of 10DLC registration is over, traffic sent on legacy long codes and shared short codes will get blocked, even penalized.
Retarus strongly advises companies that are using legacy long codes or shared short codes to switch to 10DLCs as soon as possible.
Do you need 10DLC for sending SMS messages to customers in the US? As experts in business messaging, we are happy to support your company during both the onboarding process and at every step of the transition.
