As with many legacy technologies, advances and development across the industry results in their inevitable retirement. In the U.S., the latest technology to get their scheduled extinction are fixed landline lines and legacy services known colloquially as traditional Plain Old Telephone Service (\u201cPOTS\u201d). This has been slated for some time, but finally that inevitable day now soon approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Per the FCC – in their Report and Order, Declaratory Ruling, and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking \u2013 the aforementioned POTS and fixed landlines will be phased out<\/a> and replaced with next-generation services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n For individuals, this does not change a lot: most are already equipped with high speed connections and VoIP services. But for companies, it is a different scenario. Whether they want to or not, enterprises are now forced to change or adapt countless devices and complex infrastructures in order to allow them to operate over IP. It may go under appreciated, but these legacy technologies are critical to many lines of business. One particularly vital technology whose functionality relies on these POTS lines is fax.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Clock is Ticking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
