According to IT sector association Bitkom, the German ICT industry is set to generate 40,000 new jobs this year, representing a rise of 3.5 percent over 2018.
“Digitalization is driving the market forward and is guaranteed to create more employment,” Bitkom’s president, Achim Berg, is quoted as saying in a recent press release. The statement reveals that business is going especially well for software companies and IT service providers, where by far the most jobs are being generated.
Information technology is consolidating its position as the largest market segment in the ITC sector, according to Bitkom. IT revenues are projected to rise by 2.5 percent to 92.2 billion Euros this year. The strongest growth has been seen in the software segment, which has registered an increase of 6.3 percent – up to 26 billion Euros. The market for IT services, which mainly includes project-based business and IT consulting services, also grew at an above-average 2.3 percent to 40.8 billion Euros. Bitkom also saw telecommunications picking up again over the past year (up 1.6 percent). In 2019, this market is forecast to grow by 1.1 percent to 67.3 billion Euros. The association also expects increasing revenues for services as well as terminal devices and infrastructure.
This achievement also has its downside: “The job creation results would be even better if there were enough qualified workers to fill the positions. The problem is only likely to become more acute,” Berg warns. According to a recent Bitkom study, 82,000 positions for IT experts were vacant at the end of last year. In 2017, the corresponding number was only 55,000, meaning that there has been a rise of 49 percent within a year.
