E-Voting in New South Wales

Electoral Commission relies on Retarus’ SMS services

Reading, June 22, 2015 // For online voting as offered in the State Government Elections, the New South Wales (NSW) Electoral Commission relies on messaging services from Retarus. Using the iVote® platform citizens of the Australian state can register to cast their vote online if they meet certain eligibility criteria. In order to guarantee a secure authentication, the system uses the “Retarus SMS for Applications” service connected via an API.
Retarus SMS for Applications
People enrolled in the State of New South Wales (NSW) are eligible to use the iVote® system if they are blind or have low vision, are disabled, not in NSW on election day, or not living within 20 kilometres of a polling place.
When registering on the platform, voters need to identify themselves on the Electoral Roll, provide a personal PIN and select to receive their iVote® number by SMS, email, letter or phone. The iVote® system then generates an individual iVote® number, which, for those that select SMS, is sent directly to the registered voter using the Retarus infrastructure. This number is required by the voter to login to the system and vote.

During the two week iVote® voting period for this year’s State Government Election approaching 300,000 SMS were sent by the system. As a proportion of iVote registrations are from electors outside Australia, having a messaging provider with global reach was an important consideration. Due to this success and the reliable infrastructure provided by Retarus, their SMS messaging solution is now being integrated into additional services such as the SmartRoll project as well: This online service is intended to deliver a more up-to-date, accurate and comprehensive roll for upcoming elections by allowing electors to change their address automatically.

Companies and organisations worldwide rely on Retarus Messaging Services for Applications when comes to business critical communication. By integrating the services directly into your own business applications, there is no need for any additional hardware or software. Besides text messages Retarus also supports the communication channels Fax, Email, Voice and EDI.
